Marilyn Bardie Kapaun

After a successful 12-year long career as a marketing executive for international, high tech companies, including BaaN, and helping grow two mid-sized software companies (CAPS Logistics and Extreme Logic) through innovative marketing programs, Marilyn teamed with Steve Kapaun to launch TrainingPros in 1997. Her marketing experience has driven TrainingPros to be a recognized brand in the markets they serve.

Marilyn focuses on ensuring that the TrainingPros’ brand reflects the inherent values and operating guidelines of the company—delivering a consultative approach to providing the right human capital talent at the right time and at the right price. In addition to her deep marketing experience, Marilyn brings a common sense approach to managing the business and setting strategic direction. When her business partner, Steve, has a so-called great idea, she is there to pragmatically evaluate the strategy and ensure that it aligns with our mission to serve our customers and the professionals in our talent pool.

In addition to Marilyn’s background in marketing, she matriculated from law school at Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in both Rhetoric/English and Political Science.

After a ten-year consulting career with Accenture and IBM, Steve saw an opportunity to provide corporate clients with high quality, cost effective human performance consultants. While managing large-scale consulting projects for IBM and Accenture, he frequently employed the services of traditional staffing firms and found the experience to be painstaking and time consuming. After spending five minutes ‘placing an order’ with a staffing firm that knew nothing about the human performance profession, the staffing firm would provide a stack of résumés of ill-qualified and mismatched contractors who had not been assessed from a skill or personality perspective. The staffing firm did not know the talent, did not know the culture of the requesting organization and did not know the first thing about human performance projects. That was the impetus for starting TrainingPros in 1997.

Steve believes in investing in long term relationships with both clients and the human performance professionals in each market served by TrainingPros. He believes that to deliver maximum value to clients, TrainingPros needs to invest in understanding each client’s corporate culture, individual client personalities, management and communication styles, approaches to human performance improvement and anything else that will ultimately help TrainingPros identify and match the right consultant to the personality and skill requirements of that client. Steve believes that TrainingPros needs to meet each consultant in-person and learn about their technical competencies and personality profile. He also believes that by paying the highest percentage of hourly or daily rates in the industry and not having non-competes that TrainingPros can attract the best human performance consultants in the industry.

As a consultant, Steve specializes in change management, organization development, performance improvement consulting and instructional design. While with Accenture and IBM, he had the honor of providing his services to Caterpillar, Disney, Wachovia, SAP America, Tech Data, Georgia-Pacific, Toms’ Food, Frito-Layand Pepsi-Cola. Steve is a proud alum of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (MBA in marketing and Organization Behavior) and Northern Illinois University (BS in Finance and Economics) and an even prouder husband to his wife, Marilyn, and father to his daughter, Camille.
