What are the important considerations for when Learning Management Systems (LMSs) are implemented? Throughout my career as an Instructional Designer and eLearning Developer, I’ve found that when approaching a project for any LMS platform, it’s important to stay flexible from start to finish. LMS systems can be quirky and very temperamental at times depending on the complexity of your project and your chosen method of development.
Being able to deliver assessments and track the results of LMS training initiatives is a must for any business. Having options for building those components is a great way to ensure success for the client and the training provider by anticipating potential issues before they become a concern.
Take the time to evaluate the capabilities and expectations of the client’s LMS platform. Plan the project effectively, and be ready to react with several delivery options for the eLearning piece or the assessments if the LMS poses any challenges that are due to the limitations or bugs within that platform.
How is an LMS used to track/determine the health of the company’s learning & development programs? As I previously mentioned, assessments are a great way to track the effectiveness of any training initiative. Another way to track the learner’s and the company’s overall progress, is to set up your LMS to deliver training in stages. Most LMS platforms allow for training to be delivered in stages as the learner progresses through the modules of the training program. This way, successful completion of the module or assessment is required before the learner can progress to the next module or stage of the program.
Setting up your training program in incremental stages can give your client the ability to offer certifications over a period of time. It can also allow them to deliver pieces of training as needed or as a program is being completed, all while holding the learner to incremental development goals.
In some cases (such as Articulate StoryLine), assessment results and feedback can be delivered from the learner to the client without the use of an LMS platform. It’s important to evaluate your client’s budget, needs and training expectations correctly before you work within any LMS platform. And always remain flexible.
